Australia has 39 universities: 37 public universities funded by the government and two private universities. You can study on-campus for bachelor's degrees or pursue postgraduate courses (including certificates, postgraduate diplomas, master's, and doctoral programs). Vocational courses focus on practical skills and industry training and are offered by government-funded institutions like TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and private institutions. Many colleges offer credits that can be transferred to university courses.

Academic Year

The Australian school year starts in late January or early February. Vocational and university students typically begin at the end of February or early March. Most high schools have three or four terms, while universities and vocational colleges have two semesters. Exams are held at the end of each semester (June and November), with 2-4 week breaks between semesters and a longer summer break from November/December to February. Some courses offer a summer program, allowing for a third semester in the year.

Fees and Scholarships

Australia provides a world-class education and high quality of life, but there are costs to consider. Living expenses and tuition fees in Australia are comparable to those in the United States and the United Kingdom. You can also earn some money by working part-time while studying.

The Australian Government recommends budgeting AUD$19,830 per year for living expenses. This includes accommodation, recreation, emergencies, and health expenses not covered by Overseas Student Health Cover. It's also important to consider exchange rate fluctuations when planning your budget. Average tuition fees at Australian tertiary institutions range from AUD$20,000 to AUD$30,000 per year.

Many scholarships are available for international students. Check your chosen university's scholarships website for the most current information.
